Back to Il Perugino Italian fine dining Being a local and knowing this place as I do, I have to say that Il Perugino is a good restaurant. It is a little expensive for what they serve, but for a special day, it's worth it. The maitre d knows his stuff, and makes choosing wine quite interesting. Possibly one of the best italian places to eat in Puerto Rico.

Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jan 26 2008 Best in Puerto Rico Yes, it is expensive but no more so than the other "name" restaurants in Old San Juan (Blend, Dragonfly, etc.) and it is the best restaurant in Old San Juan by quite some. The food is Umbrian so don't expect Southern Italian red tomato sauce. The ingredients come from Italy and the cooking is very authentic. They have no problem allowing you to share some dishes so you can try more things. The four of us had five course but two of the courses were shared plates. One person ordered the rare salmon and deemed it the best he'd ever had. I did not think the plates were small as some reviews have indicated. They seemed quite normal for a restaurant that would expect you to order a minimum of three courses. The wine list is exceptional and my advice is to ask the sommelier for advice. He steered us to wines that were half the price of the big name super Tuscans and every bit as good. The service very professional and at the same time also very friendly and welcoming. The ambience is romantic and warm; the restuarnat is set in a 300 year old building and has beautiful stuccoed walls. But do expect to pay for all the authenticity, imported ingredients and very high end Italian wines.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jan 13 2008 SO Overpriced! We stayed at El Convento and this charming place is right across the street. Very romantic and old world in its charm. The food was great however expect to pay big bucks! The 2 of us had 2 apps, 2 salads, 2 entrees and 2 desserts, 300 bucks! Now please dont get me wrong, the food was very good but not 300 bucks good. A salad for 17 bucks, come on! Very attentive service.. oh skip dessert, not so much!

Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Feb 16 2007 Our favorite This is unquestionably the finest restaurant in San Juan. Terrific wine list, a maitre d'/ sommelier who knows his wines and loves to help and a staff that is consistently friendly, courteous and warm. The food is absolutely exquisite. Prices are serious but match the quality of the food.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Apr 13 2005 delicious but overpriced The well-prepared classic menu doesn't get adventurous. The head waiter snubbed us until we ordered fois gras and then, once he determined we could accumulate a sizable check, he became very attentive, offering us wines by the glass that were listed on the menu as only available by the bottle, so we were able to pair a different wine with each course. In the end the savings on wine bottles did not do much to offset the astronomical bill.
