Christened in 1925, this 618-foot steamship was built during the heyday of the American Lakes steamers. Once the flagship of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (now Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.) the steamship is now listed on the International Register of Historic Ships and moored at the East 9th Street Pier. The William G. Mather sailed the Great Lakes for 55 years, hauling millions of tons of coal, iron ore and grain. Tours of the ship include the pilot's house, captain's quarters, observation lounge, crew's mess and other areas. Thanks to the painstaking restoration work, visitors can marvel at the elegant oak paneling in the passenger's dining room and the black walnut paneling of the captain's quarters (originally hidden under layers of paint). If you are looking for a more in depth tour, ask about the extended "Hard Hat" tour.
