SRO - not a Pensione
This "inexpensive pensione" is actually a single room occupancy residence, not an accomodation designed for travellers. The propriotor keeps one or two rooms available for overnight guests. The remainder of rooms are occupied by long term residents. The bathroom is down a long corrider and is shared with all of the residents on the floor. The room itself reeks of stale cigarette smoke.
