Guided Tours Of The Bay

Amazing
This is a magical, arid, geologically fascinating location. The calanques can be accessed from either Marseille (take bus to Luminy or to Les Baumettes and walk from there) or from Cassis. The hiking can be very challenging, or it can be quite managable if you take alternate routes. The hidden beaches are gems, particularly in May/June and Sept/Oct when there are few people. If you have stereotypical impressions of southern France, think again. This area is more like some of the Greek islands... very dry, dramatic, and beautiful. Kayaking and SCUBA diving in this area are also very, very good. Each bay of the Calanques has its own character, so it can be worthwhile to discover them all if you have the time to decide which one you like best. Some of them are downright difficult to access on foot, so taking a boat tour of the area is really not a bad idea - particularly if you are not able to handle hiking or if you have a fear of heights. Whatever you do: bring plenty of water!
