Built by Mr. and Mrs. John de Menil, this chapel is only one block away from the extraordinary art museum, The Menil Collection. The abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko, created 14 immense paintings for the chapel, and the meditative atmosphere that resulted makes this an incomparable and wonderful place to spend some quiet time. The renowned architect, Phillip Johnson, along with Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubrey designed this octagonal brick structure. In front of the chapel in a pool is Barnett Newman's sculpture entitled Broken Obelisk. Susan Barnes has written a history of the Rothko Chapel.
