First opened in 1853, this Melbourne institution is a shrine to sport. Known just as The G, it is used year round for sporting (mainly Aussie Rules football and international cricket) and other events. The MCG is built on the site of the first Australian Rules game and the first Test cricket match between Australia and England (in 1877). The atmosphere at the G with a capacity crowd of around 100,000 is a memorable and very Melbourne experience.

Boxing Day Test
Dec 26th, 2009 to Dec 30th, 2009
The Boxing Day Test is a day that reflects all the traditions and history that give cricket its special place in Australia's sporting heart. Families flock to the MCG on December 26th as part of their Christmas festivities, to see Australia's Test side taking on whichever foreign side is touring that summer. Crowds on this one day often outnumber those attending the entire duration of other Test matches in Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Adelaide and Hobart. If you are in Melbourne at this time of year, try to get a ticket.
