Back to Gaston et Gastounette ghastly gastounette my fiance and i decided that on our last night of holiday we would treat ourselves to a meal at one of the more popular restaurants in cannes. Although the menu was pricey we thought it would be worth the expense on our last night, assumimg the food would be excellent- this was not the case. lets begin with the starters. I myself chose the calamari and crayfish taboule, my fiance the crab tartar. although presentation wise my starter was appealing, once id had my first mouthful i'd had enough. all evidence of any flavour within the squid and crayfish was lost amongst the overpowering, complicated ingredients. the crab was not much better, clearly bulked out with salmon. for main we shared the steak for two, in a red wine sauce. the meat itself was grisly and the sauce tasted like its primary ingredient was beef bisto gravy. on the side was what can only be described as a lump of cheese covered spinach cake, bizarre. by desert we were ready to leave. i had the icecream, my fiance the profiteroles. the icecream was presented well and was actually quite nice, my fiances profiteroles were covered in a huge amount of bitter chocolate sauce, which was cold even though it said hot on the menu. The service was average, not particularly friendly, but not offensive. location wise, sitting next to a main road kind of ruined the ambience of the whole thing.
