At the center of Piazza San Domenica stands the splendid St Dominic spire, constructed before that of the Immaculate Conception which can be found on the Piazza del Gesù Nuovo. It was constructed after the terrible plague epidemic of 1656. Designed by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti and later finished in 1737 by Antonio Domenico Vaccaro. It was funded by the Dominicans, with contributions from the citizens.
The Baroque monument is adorned with medallions of male and female saints of the Dominican Order. At the very top stands a bronze statue of St Dominic.
