This museum places an emphasis on modern American art. It has grown in popularity in recent years, and thanks to an expansion in 1998, there is now a permanent collection on display. Select pieces are housed in the Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Galleries on the fifth floor, including art by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe and Alexander Calder. The building, designed by Marcel Breueritself, resembles an upside down pyramid and is an extraordinary sight.

Contemporary American Art Exhibition

Phone: +1 212 570 3600

Every two years, since 1932, the Whitney Museum has hosted arguably the most important modern art event in the city. It features new works by American artists, as well as those by contemporary international favorites of the art world. This exhibition covers every medium from painting and sculpture to film and Internet art. The competition for a spot on the roster is fierce, as only around 200 pieces may be exhibited (and a good showing can help make an artist's career).
