This is the third church to be constructed on this site, as the previous ones were all destroyed by earthquakes. Its surprisingly beautiful interior is divided into three sections and is visited by devotees who pray to the image of Santa Rita de Casia, the miracle maker, at the side alter. The Cristo de Mayo, a crucifix sculpted by Pedro Figueroa, occupies the north altar. Legend has it that during the 1647 earthquake, the crown of thorns slipped down the neck of Christ; when they tried to replace it, his face began to bleed, which is why it remains where it is today. In colonial times, the image was paraded through the city in the month of May.
