Prisoners were tortured in the basement of this building during the Spanish Inquisition between 1570 and 1820. Visitors today explore the underground dungeons and torture chambers and can view the instruments used to torture non-Christians. Frightening life-sized wax models of the victims are also to be found. The building's structure features imposing columns in a classical Greek style and an ornate tribunal room with an intricate mahogany ceiling. The museum was written about by Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa in his novel, "The Real Life of Alejandra Mayta".
