Located in the heart of Thorndon, this is thought to be New Zealand's oldest hotel. Built in 1870, it has been tastefully renovated while offering all the modern conveniences expected by travellers. Four-poster beds and native timber flooring create a turn-of-the-century ambience. Adjacent to the hotel is a self-contained cottage, of the same era, with private courtyard, spa bath and open fireplace.NYC Best Hotel Deals: 50% Savings In New York! I was visiting Wellington in April 2005 on business. A friend suggested we meet at the Shepherds Arms. It's a grand pub (hotel for Kiwis), with very friendly staff. It is affiliated with Speight's brewery, so their products are about all you can get... but they still serve about 8-10 varieties from porter through to lighter shades. The food was great. It's a short walk up from the central part of the city, but well worth it. For more on the Speight's brewery and their "southern man" theme, see http://www.speights.co.nz/
