Well worth a visit.
Loved the food. English also very good for us travellers. Supprised at the small prices charged for such great food. Very safe for the first time visitor to Shanghai.

a must
This is one of my favourite restaurants in the world. And I have been in a lot of restaurants in a lot of countries.

bravo
A bit far from the center, but you won't regret it. Excellent food, excellent service, well furnished menu, chinese food like nowhere else, thank you.

Delicious Chinese Food!!
It was clean (unlike alat of traditional chinese restaurants!) and the food was well presented. The spring rolls were gorgeous!! The staff have good English too! Many western tourists eat at this particular chinese restaurant. My family and I really enjoyed it!!

A good Shanghainese place in Shanghai
Michelle runs this place really well. I have been going since 1997 and still like it very much. The food is excellent and that's saying a lot in a town like Shanghai. And it's one of the few places that placed an emphasis on wine early on.

Poor by Chinese standards
I live in Shanghai and have been to many Chinese restaurants. I've been to 1221 twice and on both occasions found the food served up to be disappointingly average. Historically, 1221 was popular amongst tourists because it had an English menu. But most Chinese restaurants worth going to have English menus nowadays. So I would suggest you give 1221 a miss and instead, try something else really special in Shanghai!

Good food
We showed up one night to find a restaurant full of Westerners and not an empty seat to be found. The hostess curtly told us, sorry no openings tonight and then left us to clear some tables (not the most polite person working here).

Reasonable
The food is reasonable but given the range of better and cheaper alternatives opening every month in Shanghai I think it is overrated.

Not that great after all
Overrated. First of all, it's a bit hard to find as it's tugged in an alley way. Secondly, food and decor can only be described as "average", yet the price is definitely higher than many other places, and most of all, the service is pretty "cold" here. Lots of attitude. Pretencious and jaded. If you're in mood for some good Shanghai cuisine, pick up a magazine called "That's Shanghai" from your hotel and check the restaurant section. You'll see a lot of listings. Generally they're better than 1221 - only they're less known.

I go back again and again
I used to live in Shanghai and this would be the place to take visiting friends, family, and the people who came to town on business. I would have to consider this the easy choice in terms of Chinese cuisine. When I go back on business/vacation, it is one of the places that I know will be there and feel comfortable in.
