A medersa is a religious school whose main mission is providing students studying Islamic theology with both an education and room and board. In the 14th century, the Marinid Dynasty founded the Medersa Ben Youssef which was completely rebuilt in 1565 by Saadian sultan Abdallah El-Ghalib. Before it closed down at the end of the 1950s, it was one of the biggest medersas in North Africa, with a capacity of 900 students. It is now open to tourists and is worth the visit for its rich history, and also for the beauty of its central patio paved with white marble. The abundance of zellijs, stucco and sculpted cedar woodwork is bewitching. The patio is surrounded upstairs by 132 small student rooms. Entrance is 20MAD.
