In the 18th century, Moulay Ismaïl destroyed almost all architectural traces of the reign of the Saadian dynasty during the 16th and the 17th century, but he didn't dare inflict the same destruction upon their necropolis; instead, he walled it up. It was eventually rediscovered in 1917, and it was found to occupy the site of an even older necropolis! Sultan Ahmed El-Mansour is burried here, with his son and his grandson, in the most beautiful room, known as the Twelve Columns Room or the Room of the Kings. With its abundance of Carrara marble, fine-cut stucco and cedar wood, this room is viewed as a jewel of Andalusian art. There are more than 160 graves in total, encasing Saadian royal court members and their servants. Entrance is 10MAD.
