The Medersa Achouria was built in the 18th century by Ali Pacha, like two of the merdersas of the Complexe des trois médersas. By building those centers for theology students, the Ottoman bey Ali Pacha expressed his love of education. The Medersa Achouria was classified as a historical monument and renovated in 1983. Among its beautiful and notable architectural elements are the large entrance door and its square-shaped minaret, which is the sole minaret in a Medersa in Tunis. The former student rooms around the central patio are now occupied by local cultural associations. Admission is free. N.L.
