The Roman Catholic cathedral of Tunis is named after the Frenchman Vincent de Paul who was sanctified by the Pope in the 18th century. He was a priest when he was captured by pirates in 1605 and put into slavery in Tunis for two years. The two towers of the cathedral rise above Bourguiba Avenue, on the Independence Plaza. This stunning neo-Byzantine style building was constructed in the end of the 19th century.
