Built in 1855, this Hindu temple honors Perumal (or Vishnu), who is believed to have reincarnated nine times for mankind's sake. Visitors bear witness to this legend depicted upon the gorupam. Constructed in 1979, this gorupam was built with funds donated by Mr P Govindasamy Pillay, a local merchant and devotee. The temple hold shrines for the deity's two wives, Lakshmi and Andai, and his steed (or bird)--the garuda. You may also spot female devotees praying to a thulasi plant, a symbol of faith and womanhood. The temple is the starting point of the annual Thaipusam procession.Colorado Vacation GiveawayEnter for your chance to win a Colorado Vacation! www.ColoradoTourism.com

Ponggal
Jan 1st, 2010 to Jan 31st, 2010
Celebrated mainly by Hindus from Southern India, Ponggal is a time of thanksgiving for a successful harvest. Hindus cook ponggal, a sweet preparation of rice, in new pots and allow it to boil over, symbolizing prosperity. Singapore's Hindu temples fill with worshipers who offer prayers to the gods together with rice, vegetables, sugar cane and spices, which are then eaten by devotees to cleanse themselves of their sins. Visitors are welcome to witness the festival. Temple etiquette requires visitors to be dressed appropriately and shoes to be removed at the entrance.
