One of the largest royal chateaus in France, make sure you make time to visit this incredible landmark. Although the older part the chateau had been in use by King Louis the VII since the late 12th century, the great galleries built between 1522 and 1540 are considered by most the first example of Renaissance architecture in France. The palace fell into disrepair at the start of the French Revolution, until it was taken over and transformed by Napoleon Bonaparte I. Fontainebleau has played a major role in Europe’s monarchical history: Henry the III, Louis the XII and Philip the Fair were all born here, and Pope Pius VII stayed here for before the palace became the seat of the “Second Empire” of Napoleon III.
