The Marco Island Historical society, founded in 1994, investigates and preserves the islands history for the public. The society offers tours and lectures by qualified speakers. A museum exhibit is housed in the society's headquarters; they also have a second museum at 168 Palm Drive. The society constantly works to preserve the islands culture with efforts such as that to bring the "Key Marco Cat", a Calusa artifact discovered in 1896 and Marco Islands most treasured historical possession, to the Collier County Museum by the Marco Island from the Smithsonian where it is currently housed.
