An old home on Providence Road was renovated to house the Big Ben British Pub & Restaurant. The expat owners, David Harris and Paula Casey, have brought Brit-style pubbing to Charlotte. Maroon and white dominate the interior, with brass knick-knacks strewn around; you'll even find pictures of British royalty around the fireplace. The eatery can accommodate about 150 people at a time, and everything from English cheddar and wheat rolls to water crackers and mustard is on the menu. In addition to these, juicy sausage rolls and Scotch eggs can be dug into. Swing to live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

British Pub Experience Up and Down
I was excited to find this pub--my being new to Cahrlotte and loving British anything. The decor was great--looked like I was transported. The full breakfast was okay only. PArts of it were great, like the potatoes and banger, but there was only one piece of toast, unbuttered, and since my eggs were runny as I like them, I needed more and was charged another several dollars. This charge didn't please me at all. The ham was different from British ham I've had on my various journeys across England, more like a poor piece of pork. Service was slow. The room was very very cold and everyone was huddling up to the fireplace that gave no heat to speak of. The dessert, an apple crumble had fake cream on top and bitter apples. So if you don't really care that you are not having a real British meal but an American version of a British meal you will be happy. Oh and the mushrooms and tiny piece of fried tomato were not at all like the original. i am glad they are available and I would most likely go again on a warm day. Don't park in the lot during winter as the birds eat the berries on the trees and splat all over your car.

Don't Know

Why? / Why Not?
Because it is interesting and they have British cider which I like and they bring memories back of my many happy trips to England.

True British Atmosphere
My fiance' and I found this a true British expierence. He's from Scotland, but was educated at Oxford and has lived in England for the past 40 years. He thinks this is the closest thing that Charlotte has to "true British cusine". The fish and chips are wonderful. One truly thinks they're on Holiday when they step inside the restaurant. Great food at great prices. You surely won't leave hungry.
