The South Yarra shopping precinct is the place to go in Melbourne for fashion and style. A favourite haunt of the city’s trendiest black-clad caffe latte sippers, it also draws celebrity visitors to Melbourne, looking for that special little outfit. Chapel Street’s long shopping strip of predominately fashion boutiques is punctuated with equally stylish cafés, restaurants and bars, so there is no danger of suffering thirst or hunger while you shop. The Jam Factory centre contains cinemas, restaurants and the huge Borders book and music emporium. The Windsor end between High Street and Dandenong Road is more laid back and raffish with its many quirky second hand dealers and bargain shops. A side street, Greville Street is Melbourne’s headquarters of alternative cool, while Commercial Road is home to many gay and lesbian retailers. Toorak Road continues Chapel Street’s fashion theme but is more upmarket and exclusive. Whether you come for serious shopping or just to stroll, browse and enjoy the passing parade, a visit to South Yarra makes for an enjoyable day out. If you want to look the part, put on your coolest clothes (black is always in style) and join the crowd.
