This great museum stocks some of the world's most famous artists from various periods. Visitors can find art from the Early Renaissance period, the First French Empire, and the world's largest Monet collection as well as over 300 paintings from the Impressionist and post-Impressionist periods. The museum was created when a hunting lodge was bought from the owners in 1882 by Jules Marmottan and then later converted into a museum by his son Paul, whose personal collection is on display. The gift shop offers excellent souvenirs of the visit.

In 1981 the museum received 313 miniature works taken from books and created on parchment paper. Created by Flemish, French, Italian and English artists from the 13th to 16th century, these pictures record life in the middle ages. Giulio Clovio's (1560) paintings work well to represent illustrative art.
