They say that when Pancho Villa visited La Nueva Ópera, he left a bullet hole in the ceiling. It is not known if that was his seal of approval or not. In any case, this bar dates back to 1870 and has entertained generations of famous Mexicans. The bar's popularity and its relaxed but refined atmosphere mean that the drinks are a bit more expensive than the norm, but don't let that put you off. La Nueva Ópera is definitely worth a visit, even if it is only to try the excellent Mexican tapas.
