Founded in 1947 by an elite group of actors (including Gregory Peck), the La Jolla Playhouse is a local non-profit gem with national renown. The Playhouse, one of the top West coast venues, has been decorated with over 300 honors, including the 1993 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. From musicals to Shakespeare, the schedule runs the gamut. As a part of the University of California, San Diego campus, the La Jolla Playhouse attracts a relatively young audience, along with more seasoned theatergoers. Often used for out-of-town dress rehearsals for major playwrights like Neil Simon, David Mamet and Arthur Miller, the Playhouse is the place to go if you can't quite make it to New York's Great White Way.
