Originally built during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) this still functioning temple rates as one of Xiamen's most popular attractions. Over the years, it has gone through many renovations including the 1936 addition of the Pavilion. Buddhist scriptures, Buddha images, ivory sculptures, bronze bells and a massive lotus pond are the main features of the temple. Despite its influx of tourists, the resident monks pray and function as if in complete solitude. A vegetarian restaurant is on site.
