The Sapporo Yuki Matsuri or Snow Festival was started in 1950 when some high school students made half a dozen snow statues in Odori Park. It has since become one of the most spectacular festivals in Japan. Every year, for a week at the beginning of February, local and international ice sculptors from around the world create fantastic art out of snow and ice. Expect to see gigantic mythical dragons, famous structures, like the pyramids or St. Paul's Cathedral and massive ice slides. The Festival takes place in Odori Park, Makomanai and Susukino. It is free, so wrap up warmly and enjoy it. Dates vary according to venue, check website for details.
