This is the island's premier cultural festival. It honors Puerto Rican cellist, composer, conductor and pianist, Pablo Casals. Recognized as the greatest 20th-century master of the cello, he founded the event in 1957. Internationally known artists such as Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Rubinstein, Mstislav Rostropovich, Andres Segovia, J.P. Rampal and Zubin Mehta have performed at this extravaganza as well as other local talent held in high esteem. Concerts take place at the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center, the Reichhold Center for the Arts in St. Thomas, and the University of Puerto Rico's Theater, José M Lázaro Library, Mayagüez Campus, and Humacao Campus.
