If you really want to wow someone with a throwaway dining venue, you can't go wrong with Court Restaurant at the British Museum. Situated in the museum's stunning Great Hall, the restaurant is accessed by climbing the central staircase where you will be elevated to the museum's airy heights. As the roof is a gorgeous glass masterpiece of triangular panes, the restaurant assumes a Mediterranean atmosphere, aided by a distinctly mezzanine feel to the place, even though the weather can be decidedly wintery outside. Smart, waistcoated waiters are on hand to assist you whether you're stopping for tea and cakes or a main along the lines of Lamb Confit with Cherry and Spearmint Jelly. Whatever you fancy, it’s a lovely, calming place to come for a coffee or an early dinner.
