The Anzac Day services held around the country and at the Auckland War Memorial Museum draw both young and old to honour all Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women who fought in, and those who never returned from, foreign fields. Those involved in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during the First World War are particularly remembered. April 25 is the anniversary of that brave but disastrous assault. Dignitaries lay wreaths, elderly returned servicemen and women parade, hymns are sung and military bands play. Many families with young children come to pay their respects at this service.
