Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of the most famous shrines in Japan—so much so that shrines with similar names can be found all over the country. This shrine has a very long history and is widely venerated as the home of the guardian deity of sailors. Passing under the enormous archway gate, you come to the taiko bashi, or "drum bridge," for which the shrine is especially renowned. The bridge gets packed with masses of people on New Year's Day and other celebrations. Events are staged at the shrine all year round; New Year's and summer festivals are the most important ones.

quiet, peaceful, free of tourists
After months in Japan, I've become a little of sick of seeing temples populated by high school tours and disrespectful foriegners. This is better than any of the temples in Kyoto. It's beautiful, peaceful and I was the only one there at 1 in the afternoon on a sunny saturday. There were a couple of worshippers and one man chanting under a waterfall, which was really beautiful. The whole experience felt genuine and reverent, which is ususally not the case. It's easiest to get to via tram from Tennoji, but none of the signs are in english or romanji. The JR goes there as well.

This will give you the feeling of a true functional temple. It isn't just a pretty picture, though it is beautiful.
