For one week out of the year, the Aix-en-Provence Film Festival (l'association des Rencontres Cinématographiques d'Aix-en-Provence) brings the city to life. Cinematic awareness for youth, a night of shorts, and meetings with directors promoting their cinematic debuts are all part of this event which favors avant-garde cinema. The Pasino entertainment complex, Le Mazarin, a movie theater showing art-house and experimental films set-up in the heart of the Quartier Mazarin, and the City Bookstore (Cité du Livre) in the western neighborhoods, serve as the main venues for this festival.
