Back to La Valencia Hotel one of our favorite places in the world Have stayed there many times. Am bringing my whole family to stay in July to celebrate my 70th birthday. Love the central location, Pacific view, courtyard for lunches & Sunday brunch, visiting the seals on the beach accross the street..........I could go on & on.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jan 06 2008 Never Eat There On An Empty Stomach My wife and I waited half an hour for our order to be taken and then waited over an hour and a half. Nothing. Finally, we left because we had to be somewhere else. Judging from the other people around us, it may have taken at least another half hour for the food to arrive. I should add that the Whaling Bar is nice. I would never eat at this hotel, however. Well, let me amend that; I would eat there, but only if I had a full meal somewhere else first

Reviewed by: Deborah from on Sep 30 2007 Great Hotel! This place is awesome! Its an older hotel but has all the creature comforts of the newer places. The staff was quite simply the best I have ever experienced. We needed maintenance for a minor issue with the room safe and they showed up in 3 minutes, left to get a new safe and returned again in 5 minutes. From the Valets the front desk staff, they were all great. We got a free room upgrade too. All the amenities of the fancy places at a reasonable cost relatively speaking. Highly recommend this hotel.
Reviewed by: Kevin from on Jun 02 2007 Beware the rooms The public areas are quite nice but the rooms are very, very small - we had to turn sideways to walk around the wed - and the decor was terrible. It was like Edith Prickley from SCTV designed them - awful leopard-skin with hideous chandelier and one mirrored wall (no doubt to make the teeny tiny room appear bigger). NO closet space - the tiny closet was filled with the in-room safe and in-room regrigerator. One of the two small windows was broken, as was the electrical outlet below it. We could not escape to the beautiful but small lobby because the hotel had rented it out for a private party! When we complained the hotel sent a bottle of complimentary wine up to our room. Unfortunately it was late and we had gone to bed and put a "do not disturb" sign on the door, but they knocked anyway. (What use are do not disturb signs if staff ignores them?) We could not sleep well in the warm room and could not open the window because of the noise of a private party being held below. Hotel is very old - needs to be raced and replaced but I realize it is considered historic. We would not stay here again.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jan 23 2006 The Perfect Honeymoon My husband and I live in NY but eloped to La Jolla in 1995. We had originally booked another hotel, but found it to be run down. So we went into town and found La Valencia. It is beautiful and when we told the concierge our dilemna, he got us a wonderful room overlooking the ocean and the staff could not do enough for us. They were all so helpful and really excited about us getting married. They also have an incredible restaurant on the upper floor. The food and service were amazing - definitely try the creme brulee - we have never had one as good since!
