Famous for being one of the last leftist haunts in town, this tavern was established in 1954. It’s one of the few Meyhanes (taverns) around that does not drown out the intense political conversation of journalists and intellectuals with loud Fasil (traditional Turkish) music. Refik Arslan, the gruff-voiced, grumpy owner, still greets patrons at the door. Hidden away in the backstreets of bohemian Tünel, it’s an excellent place to get an introduction to Istanbul’s boisterous Meze and Raki culture. Most of the regular clientele consume far more cigarettes and Raki here than they do Meze and fish. Despite this, it’s known for the wonderful Black Sea cuisine it offers. However, there’s no menu so you have to look and point.
