The evil king Mayadenawa-who forced his people to worship him instead of the gods-was said to be defeated here in the 11th century. Rulers from three opposing religious factions held a meeting to celebrate their triumph. Once a year (usually in May), the temple comes alive with its War of the Offerings where the men of the village, holding hands run around the temple as ocean waves crash into the shrines. They then take the top of the offerings and beat one another with them-whooping and having a grand time. Admission: By donation.
