This quarter, dominated by the tall Romanesque tower of the church of St. Croix, was a populous suburb in the past. It was not assimilated into the fortified urban walls until the start of the 14th century. In this quarter lived livestock farmers (whose herds were used to unload goods from ships), rope makers who braided hemp, and cobblers and potters who plied their trade on la rue des Fours. At the end of the 16th century sugar refineries were established here. The church of St. Croix was has been the seat of the parish since 1130.NYC Best Hotel Deals: 50% Savings In New York!
