Piraeus—the port city of Athens—became a Mediterranean naval powerhouse during the 5th century BC and remained a major commercial centre until its destruction by the Romans in 87 BC. Traces of the city’s prosperity are exhibited at the archaeological museum near the Zea Harbour. The museum’s collection contains statues, grave monuments, reliefs and pottery, mainly from the 5th and 4th century BC. Right next to the museum are the ruins of an ancient theatre.
