In the eighteenth century, the ship Götheborg sank just outside Gothenburg on its way home from China. The hold was full of porcelain and spices. When divers salvaged some of the remaining cargo in the 1980s, they came up with the idea of building an exact replica of the ship. Construction began in the 1990s at the closed-down wharf Eriksberg, and the plan is to have the ship at sea within a few years. When the ship is ready it will sail to China, after being exhibited in Europe.
