Mersing is a rustic fishing village town about 136 kilometres north-east of Johor Bahru. It is famed as a stepping-off point to the Johor's underwater paradise; more specifically, a group of islands off the east coast anchored by the world-renowned Tioman Island. For years, boatloads of tourists depart from Mersing's jetties and headed for these beautiful islands. The town itself hosts dozens of travel agencies that specialise in island tours. There are also several very good restaurants that serve up fresh and cheap seafood.
