A MUST SEE and STAY LOCATION
We recently stay at the Lodge, from Sept 18 -20, 2009. Cabin was excellent, all food we ate was beyond compare. Entire staff was "the most amiable and pleasant staff to be encountered in many years and trips.

Unforgettable!!
We stayed at the Lodge in October and we so impressed with the beautiful scenery and how charming the ambiance of the Lodge was. Our cabin was just what we had hoped for, a clean, rustic, private place to retreat after each day of hiking. The restaurant was awesome, we had a nice dinner over looking the canyon at sunset. We cannot wait to return in 2009. We already have reservations!!!

More primitive than I expected
If you go in the summer, there is no air-conditioning. Granted, at the North Rim the nights are cooler, but don't plan any naps in the room during the afternoon. Bring plenty of supplies before entering the North Rim, because there is limited access to food and drinks in the park and you are held hostage to the prices (and limited choices) within the park. We had originally planned to stay for 5 days, but cut it down to 3. 4-5 days is not enough time to go down into the canyon with kids, and so we hiked mostly around the rim. Went to the "hoe-down" buffet and show - which wasn't too bad, there was nothing else to do in the evening anyway. The rooms of the cabins are old and out-dated and haven't been refurbished in years, so don't expect any luxury - think 1950s travel lodges. We are really glad that we cut down our time at this lodge, probably could've stayed even one night less.

30th Anniversary Dream
I liked everything about the Lodge @ North Rim. The convenience of staying at the lodge in a motel room with easy access to many of the trails made our stay there more enjoyable. I read reviews before we arrived and knew the choices for food/restaurants were VERY LIMITED .....we instead brought pre-cooked meals that we heated up and brought snacks and food to make sandwiches for our hikes. Everything WAS PERFECT!!! I am considering making a trip to the North Rim an annual event. The North Rim is BY FAR way better than the south rim.....after spending 3 nights at the North Rim Lodge, we spent a night in Tusayan and visited the South Rim.......just to be able to compare the two. North Rim's views and trails are superior!! I would consider the South Rim only to hike down to the river and maybe spend a night .....it seemed from the South Rim, your hike to the river is much easier. South Rim is too BIG CITY hustle and bustle with people, tour buses, and noise EVERYWHERE........the trails were VERY CROWDED and it just doesn't have the quiet, solitude and BEAUTY of the North Rim. Spending our 30th wedding anniversary in such an awe inspiring place created very special memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. The reviews and comments were a big help in knowing what to expect....we went there hoping for ok accommodations and were very pleased with the cleanliness of the rooms and the friendliness of the staff.....our room was 'serviced' every day (very early I might add) and the room was adequate for 2 people. I was a little surprised to find that there are no TVs in any of the rooms.......this too turned out to be no big deal......and it forced us to spend more time than we would have outdoors!!!! I recommend the NORTH RIM LODGE, a western room if you can get it, if not, a motel room was adequate. When we were leaving, one of the workers told us they were going to 'gut' and completely remodel the motel rooms.......I am anxious to to see what they will look like when we return. Our stay at the North Rim Lodge was perfect.......I can't think of anything that would/could have made it better.....well...maybe a couple of things: a rim view Western Cabin and a microwave in our room. Even the weather was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT the 3 days we were there.....and a FULL MOON the last 2 nights to top it off!!! We were told the restaurant is under new owner/management and that the food is very good......we did not eat there because we brought our own home cooked meals .....the prices are VERY HIGH $33 for a steak!! 3 meals a day at those prices would rack up a pretty high food bill. The extra mileage to get to the North Rim is worth every mile and besides that you have to drive through the painted dessert and the vermilion cliffs to get there........the view down 89 is amazing!! I look forward to a return visit!!!

Don't listen to the whiners!
It's a rustic national park people, not the Ritz! Words like magical from some of the more favorable reviews are right on the mark. If we had listened to some of you, we would have missed out on one of the most awesome experiences of our vacationing lifetime. I've stayed in many national parks. One thing you can count on is that they're all unique and endearingly quirky. Rarely is it even close to Ritz quality and usually not the goal. Facilities are generally fairly ancient but that is part of the charm and ambiance. If you allow yourself to be mentally tranported to a different era you won't be sorry, and THAT is the goal. Most of the newer staff members are students with summer jobs, so it is incredibly rude to be critical or hostile toward them since they are not professionals. Show some humanity by being patient and understanding just like you hoped people would treat you when you were young and imperfect. They do a BETTER job when you vicious crybabies leave them alone. By bringing your self-absorbed baggage to one of these amazing rustic settings, you ruin the atmosphere and experience for everyone else. So if it's all about you, stay in Manhatten you obnoxious elitist jerk!

Highs and lows for July 2008
Two couples for our 25th and 30th anniverseries had adjoining Frontier cabins. Be careful on this, log walls are not soundproof and I got blamed for the other guys snoring!

Grand Canyon North Rim
My family thought this place was absolutely magical!! We spent three nights in a Pioneer cabin, certainly rustic, but totally part of the "historic experience". The cabin was clean and fairly basic, it was good for us. The Deli was good for grab and go sandwiches and the Dining Room has the greatest breakfast buffet with a view!! The kids really wanted to ride the Cookout train, apparently a new dinner event at the North Rim...we purchased tickets for the Cookout, superb food, perfect outdoor atmosphere, great live entertainment-good, clean fun! It is hard enough to keep kids entertained on vacation, this was an hour and a half of music and comedy, great way to spend the early evening. Overall the staff was very friendly everywhere we saw them. Cannot wait to plan next year's visit. I think Forever Resorts is doing a really nice job, the Lodge looks great.
