Map | add to Travel Bag (NEW)

This small two-cell courtyard built in the mid-1800s and burned down in the Great Fire of 1886, used to serve as the city's first jail. It is a Gastown landmark that consists mainly of a commemorative sign and some bars in the cobblestone alley way that used to hold the frontier town's unruly citizens, but it's a must-visit for the turn-of-the-century tales it carries. The small square with its antique light fixtures and explanatory plaques now features studios, offices, and a charming pub called the Irish Heather. Admission is free.
