Tougaloo College was founded in 1869, appropriately enough, on the former site of a Mississippi plantation. A pioneer in the education, training and enlightenment of former slaves, Tougaloo now stands as one of the most respected historically black colleges in America. Many of the campus buildings have been preserved and restored, including the impressive Coleman Library, which houses an extensive collection of Civil Rights artifacts and materials as well as a multi million dollar art collection.
