Back to 17-Mile Drive Lookee at that there big house ma Get real. 17 mile drive is nothing more than another cash sink hole where tourists are bilked out of a few more dollars. Monterey on the whole is overrated and honestly unless you are going to play golf or live out there 17-mile is a joke. Head to SC or up into the redwoods or head south and enjoy big sur.
Reviewed by: PB from on Jul 09 2009 Totally boring. I don't know how people can rave about the views. We took Hwy 1 north to Carmel from Hearst Castle. Now THAT was breathtaking. And free! We picnicked on the way north as well; free beaches. So the 17-mile drive was a huge disappointment. Even if there was no charge I wouldn't recommend it. There is so much better scenery elsewhere.
Reviewed by: Kristy from on Apr 23 2009 Excellent This was a great value! You can load up the car for under 10 bucks and go on a great scenic tour. You stop at Pebble Beach along the way. Dont be in a rush if you do this, just enjoy the ride.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Apr 22 2009 No going back for $9.25 you can buy a nice lunch and drive on big sur for free for a better view of the ocean. If you want to see big houses, drive down Los altos, Atherton. I was totally disappointed and bored, even the restrooms were hard to find.
Reviewed by: Cyril F from on Nov 17 2008 Gorgeous Place I LOVED this area of California when my family last went. Monterey and Carmel were beautiful, and getting to see the Basilica is something unexpected anymore. The coast was breathtaking, and it didn't look like something air-brushed out of a magazine-it was real. 17 mile drive was also fantastic! I don't know why people put it down. So you had to pay almost $9? I have to pay $4 every DAY to go across a bridge to go to work, but it's worth it, and plus the Puget Sound is another gorgeous place to see, and I get to live there. It is like Washington's own Big Sur, which is also as beautiful as 17 mile drive.
Reviewed by: Jimena from on Oct 09 2008 Wouldn't go again The drive is nice enough. However, I am puzzled why they charge for it. You get better scenery north of San Francisco on the coast.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Aug 11 2008 Totally Worth It The trip was unplanned but It was really beautiful. The beaches, crystal sand, million dollar homes, relaxing atmosphere and the breath taking views were spectacular. I don't know why people are complianing about 9.00 entrance fees. A whole day well spent, filled with fun and laughter with my family at this beautiful beach was priceless.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on May 25 2008 Spectacular Sunset This was an amazing few hours. I started the 17 mile drive close to 5pm, hoping to time the sunset. The first part is not too scenic, however once you drop down onto beach road it's breath taking. The sun was low in the sky, the waves were crashing on the rocks. People were surfing and walking on the beach and it was so peaceful.
Reviewed by: gagirl3 from on Oct 22 2007 Definitely must go! I go to 17miledrive without planning ahead, but this is the most valuable place in my north cal trip! words cant explain, you must go to see it!
Reviewed by: T3T from on May 16 2007 Good if you have the time I am from the midwest (chicago suburubs) and I considered the 17-mile drive quite beautiful and relaxing (at least from the passenger's point of view). If you are from out of town, definetly take a camera. I notice that there are many people complaining about the $8.50 toll. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! If you're on vacation, you shouldn't be pinching pennies. And if you live in CA itself, you shouldn't be complaining since you know all about prices there. If you have the time, you definetly should go on the drive at least once in your lifetime. But don't forget to also go south and see Big Sur and the Bixby Bridge too!!
