Before World War II, Petersstraße was known for its numerous trade fair buildings, exclusive hotels, and what would later become the Centrum department store, a familiar name to every East German. The street itself is extremely old and bestowed with charming architecture. The name harks back to the Peterskirche, which stood here until it was torn down at the end of the 19th century in order to make way for a road. The street lends itself perfectly to an afternoon stroll.
