Romantic Proposal
I choose this hotel to propose to my long time girlfriend. I rented one of their top suites and set up a plan including a video of our time spent together as a couple. The concierge helped me by recommending Romantic Room Designs which met me in the room and decorated it with rose petals, candles, lots of flowers etc.. The staff was very accommodating and helped ease my nerves. Beautiful room, beautiful hotel! Oh, and she said yes!
Would you recommend this to a friend?
Don't Know

Why? / Why Not?
The spa, the restaurants, the overall feel and experience along with the tremendous service (especially from the concierge)

Outstanding service and perfect location
Our stay here was outstanding. The room are spacious and well appointed. The staff was so helpful and accessible. My family loved the apple bowl at the front desk, nice touch. We spent many mornings in the lobby by the fireplace watching the sea otters in the bay.

Disappointed in service
Went for spa treatments, rooms were cold and the table for the sugar scrub was very uncomfortable. The headrest was not positioned properly so you either felt like you were being choked because it went across your throat your you had to put your chin on that part, leaving your head too high. Either way was uncomfortable.

Don't waste your $$$$
Friendly staff greeted my family and I only to be followed by the most uncomfortable hotel going experience I've ever had. They lure you in by offering a fairly nice looking hotel. Then they don't inform you that there is NO AIR CONDITIONING! This forces you to open the windows and subjects you to a rather noisy street scene. (Motorcycles, loud music and delivery trucks) Needless to say, between the noise and hot, stale air, restful sleep was at a minimum. Several guests I spoke with had similar complaints. Don't let the good reviews fool you...don't stay here. It's overpriced and substandard.

Excellent Hotel
This was one of my best experiences staying at a hotel! The staff is extremely courteous and helpful and the facility is very elegant. After reading some of the previous one and two-star reviews, I can’t believe these people stayed in the same hotel that I experienced. It’s true that the facility has no air conditioning but really folks! … this hotel is in Monterey California and NOT Las Vegas or Houston Texas!! There’s no need for AC when the rooms open directly to the Monterey Bay where temperatures rarely exceed 70 degrees. And it’s also true that you may hear the barking from the harbor seals but that’s also part of the atmosphere of staying at a hotel located directly on the Bay.

nice hotel -- but NO A/C!
It's a lovely place in a great location, but if you are on the inland side, as we were, the lack of A/C is a big issue. We were routinely uncomfortably warm, including when going to bed at 10 p.m. When asked for assistance, we were told we could get an extra fan. Well, in a nice hotel like that, it seems rather odd to be laying there with 3 fans blowing praying for a breeze through an open window. An upgrade would have been $150-200 more per night -- well, we didn't want an upgrade, we just wanted to be comfortable! Isn't that *their* problem? Not in their view. It was "warm for Monterey" that weekend -- well, welcome to climate change. We heard from guests on the ocean side that while there were lovely breezes, the sea lions barked all night. Bottom line, guests need to be able to control the room temperature in a nice hotel.

Fabulous!
We discovered this beautiful hotel several years ago quite by accident and wandered through it before we decided to come back and stay. The experience was one we will never forget from the wonderful down pillows to the sounds of the crashing waves. (We bought the pillows by the way!)We have been returning every year on special occasions or just because...

Excellent combination of location, quality and value
The service was friendly and professional without being pushy or overly familiar. The front desk knew the details of our reservation and everything was exactly as promised.

Monterey Plaza Hotel
Avoid the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Worst ever experience. Hot and noisy rooms even when cool outside. No air-conditioning in any of the rooms. Management rude and refused to listen to complaints or do anything. Very bad attitude. I suppose we were luckier than some after reading other reviews.
