Back to Settha Palace Hotel history I stayed in this hotel in 2007 and found it very satisfactory. In 1974-75 I lived across the street in a North Vietnam enclave. At that time it was the headquarters of the communist Pathet Lao, who in May 1975 took control of the country. There was a guard on duty 24 hours a day posted in front of the building with whom I exchanged glances every day. I was pleased to have been able to stay in the building knowing its history.

Going back more than thirty years later I was able to see see the changes in Vientiane. While still a "sleepy" capital, I enjoyed my stay. Only the Tat Dam was the same, as my old haunts had disappeared. The hotel is French in decor and amenities and the restaurant is fine. I recommend it. Jim Murray
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Nov 17 2007 highlight of laos stayed at the settha palace in aug 07. for a frequent traveller, it was the best hotel i have been to in laos (and dare i say, possibly the best i have been to so far in all my travels?)
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Oct 23 2007 definitely worth going back The moment i stepped out of the taxi, I was greeted with warm smiles from the door man to counter staffs. All the staffs are fluent in English which eliminated the problem of communication. The old colonial style design of the hotel gave it a tranqulizing ambience. I find the room immaculate and the overall design, particularly the bathroom, elegant. It was a pity that I didn't manage to try the restaurant at the hotel as I read from a travel journal that the food there is excellent. It was my first and only night in Vientianne thus, my desire to go out and try the local food. Nonetheless, I would definitely go back and try it one day. All in all, the experience I had at Settha Palace was one of the highlights of my trip to Laos.

Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Aug 24 2005 an excellent french-colonial style hotel a great place compared to all other hotels in vientiane, by far the most elegant, rather central location, excellent and smiling overall service, great furnishing, large rooms, good buffet breakfast (although at that time of the day if very crowded service can be at times a bit too slow), fantastic french dishes at the restaurant, large pool and garden area. absolutely to be advised despite prices NOT cheap: but it's worth the money. pity absolutely no french spoken!
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jun 03 2005 wish to go back again The best hotel in Vientiane, excellent location, nice atmosphere, the same level of quality and service will cost more than $150 in Bangkok.
