On Tel Aviv's doorstep, the town of Rishon LeZion ("first of Zion") remains significant because of the pioneering role it played in the early Zionist movement. This role is well-preserved, with the town museum depicting its history right up to the present day, and the town hall dating from 1888 is worth a visit. Rishon's central role in Israeli wine production is emphasized by the excellent Carmel winery which offers tours (and tasting, of course!). A pleasant selection of quiet cafés and restaurants inside the center makes a pleasant change from the other venues of Tel Aviv.
