In the year 2000 a whole millennium will have passed since the supposed discovery of North America by Icelander Leifur Eiríksson. This year Iceland, Canada and the USA jointly celebrate this 1000th anniversary of Leifur the Lucky's discovery. When exploring Reykjavík's centre the statue of Leifur outside Hallgrímskirkja is a must-see. The statue was a gift to Iceland from the United States Government in 1974. The artist was the American Sterling Calder.
