The earliest written document to mention the island of Viikinsaari dates already from 1569, when the island was still called Jomasaari (Divine Island). According to the story, Viikinsaari Island got its current name when the lord of Viikki Manor bought the island. At the end of the nineteenth century Viikinsaari was a place of entertainment for the city's gentry. The city of Tampere bought the island in 1892, and a new restaurant was built to replace the old one that had been destroyed in a fire. The City of Tampere Cultural Office got the island for its use in 1992. In addition to the summer restaurant, there is a kiosk, and grill and barbeque places for those who have brought their own food. For the children there is a playground as well as a football field, a volleyball court and a mini-golf course. Visitors can also use the beaches and the sauna (which needs to be booked in advance). You can get to Viikinsaari by boat during the summer (beginning of June to mid-August). The boat leaves from the Laukontori harbour and the trip to the island takes 20 minutes. For reservations and bookings contact the City of Tampere Cultural Office, Puutarhakatu 11, 33210 Tampere; tel. +358 3 3146 6137, fax +358 3 3146 6756, email elise.pedersen@tt.tampere.fi.
