The Living Art Museum is Reykjavíks major modern art gallery, and has for years been at the forefront of Icelandic progressive art activity. Founded in 1978, it is a private institution run by an association of artists called the Living Art Museum Association. Located in an extremely suitable three-floor backyard building on Vatnsstígur, originally designed as an industrial building by architect Einar Erlendsson, it still retains its raw and rough atmosphere. The Living Arts museum has primarily been a venue for exhibitions and artistic events of various kinds, and recently the museum has also been gaining importance as a place for artists to meet and exchange opinions.
